Paris Hilton

Britney Spears' ex-husband Kevin Federline has been photographed chatting intimately to socialite Paris Hilton.

Federline was pictured whispering into the star's ear at a Las Vegas club over the weekend, before giving her a kiss on the cheek.

The couple then shared a joke before partying together for the remainder of the evening.

Federline's divorce from Spears was finalized in July and he has since been romantically linked to a string of other women including Playboy Playmate Nicole Narain, who he split from earlier this month.

Change of attitude: up for a challenge

Some are still in theaters, (although some quick listings research shows that if you want to see "No Country for Old Men' or worse "There Will Be Blood" your options narrow markedly at the end of the week,) a lot are available on DVD already. and the others I just have to dredge from memory.

I am also lucky in that many of the Spirit Award nominees are available online to paid up members, although the challenge then becomes finding a computer with a good enough link to be able to watch a film without being driven crazy by repeated buffering. (It also just doesn't seem like a smart idea to watch something like "Lust Caution" at my desk at work.)

So, here we go. How many of the major Oscar nominated films can an ordinary person (albeit with extraordinary internet access) see between the Oscar nominations and the Awards show?

I'll let you know.

Yosemite in winter: The splendor without the crowds

As I tumble upward, everybody looking at me is somebody I've already seen elsewhere in the park. Hello again! I want to say, I'm about to break my wrist!

As I land, I try to take solace in another bit of Yosemite winter wisdom, one shared by longtime park ranger Dick Ewart: "When people fall down in the summer, they swear. When people fall down in the winter, they laugh."

Winter rhythms

Yosemite winter days possess their own rhythm. Even the most routine national park activity -- the easy nature hike -- takes on the meditative pace of a pilgrimage.

On our second morning, we follow a ranger through a snow-softened valley meadow, acquiring the requisite bits of natural history. In winter, Yosemite's bears do not hibernate, the ranger says.

Soros accuses Fed of panic rate cut

Nouriel Roubini of New York University, a bear on the US and global economy, agreed and called for a more symmetric approach from the Fed. “There was a Greenspan put and now there is a Bernanke put," he said, in reference to the perception that the Fed chairman always cuts interest rates when investors lose money.

But the more worrying suggestion by many was that the action might not be sufficiently effective to head-off a US recession.Joe Stiglitz, a Nobel prize-winning economist at Columbia University, said the Fed's action was “too late" and, with structural forces in the US housing and financial systems likely to bring a contraction, would be as effective as “pushing on a piece of string".

Online Auctioneer EBay Shifts Gears

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Calling eBay Inc. her "baby," outgoing chief executive Meg Whitman is promising a smooth transition to a new corporate leadership team as she gives up day-to-day control of the online auction company she has led for 10 years. "EBay is my baby in many ways, and I wanted to make sure the transition was handled in a first class way," Whitman told The Associated Press. She will remain on eBay's board of directors and make herself available to the new team, but looks forward to escaping the 24/7 grind.

Digital Music Sales Up Worldwide

LONDON (AP) - Record companies' revenue from digital music sales rose 40 percent to $2.9 billion over the past year, but the growth is still failing to cover losses from collapse of international CD sales, the music industry's global trade body said Thursday.
