Mattingly: New Role In L.A.

Easler, 57, a former Yankees and Red Sox DH, spent the last two seasons as a hitting coach in the Dodgers' minor league system.

Knoblauch subpoenaed: Former Yankees second baseman Chuck Knoblauch was subpoenaed by a congressional committee investigating steroids in baseball after he failed to respond to an invitation to give a deposition.

Knoblauch, 39, part of the Yankees' 1998, 1999 and 2000 champions, also played for the Twins and Royals. He was asked to appear Thursday, the first of five depositions of persons named in the Mitchell Report scheduled by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee prior to its Feb. 13 hearing. Roger Clemens is scheduled to speak to committee staff Saturday, followed by Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte Jan. 30. Brian McNamee, a former personal trainer for Clemens and Pettitte, is due Jan.

Bush and Congress strike deal on economic plan

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 108 points at 12378.61 as news of the stimulus deal helped lift investor sentiment.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Republican Leader John Boehner and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson hammered out the deal after Bush returned from a Middle East trip a week ago.

"It is timely, it is targeted and it is temporary and it was done in record time since our conversation with the president," Pelosi said.

But the California lawmaker suggested that Democrats might propose additional legislation if the stimulus package fails to spur the economy.

"I can't say that I'm totally pleased with the package," she said. "But ... I do know that it will help stimulate the economy, and if it does not then there will be more to come."

ONE PERCENT OF GDP

The proposal could undergo some changes when it reaches the Senate, where its price tag could climb even higher than the current $150 billion, or about 1 percent of U.S.

Diverse campaign strikes chord on campus

Post student Atinuke Awoyomi and several others at the Brookville campus say the national debate has overlooked the most exciting part of the campaign: the inspirational effect.

Awoyomi, 20, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Nigeria, says the viability of Clinton and Obama makes the Democratic race inspiring, particularly for a new American like she. "For now, we don't know who's going to win the ticket," said Awoyomi, who lives with her family in Elmont. "I was just telling my dad ... that we have a woman candidate and a black candidate. I think it's really making people think about America in a new way. I think it's going to change the politics of America. It's going to change everything."

Robert Hartle found guilty

After a few hours of deliberation Robert Hartle was found guilty of two counts of first degree murder, one county of second degree murder and arson. Hartle was accused of killing a couple in their 60s back in May of 2006. Police say months later Hartle then killed his girlfriend, Samantha Mottler, because she knew of the murders.

News 10NBC has also obtained the tape of a 911 call and a surveillance tape played during the trial and may have been key in the jury's verdict. The 911 tape included an emotional friend of Samantha Motler. Mottler's body had just been discovered and she spotted Robert Hartle close to the scene.

One one portion of the tape, the operator says, "Does he have any weapons and is he on foot?" The caller replied, "He's got two knives. Got two knives.

Leeson, the rogue Barings trader, speaks to the highest bidder

Leeson told Irish public radio in October that liquidators for Barings had an injunction allowing them to seek the return of £100 million from him but said that in practice it was little more than a bargaining tool he could largely ignore. "They are not pursuing me," he said in the interview. "I did not steal any money - that was never in question." The liquidators were not immediately available for comment. Leeson said he had so far paid less than £500,000 back and was liable only to pay them a share of his earnings from "anything related to Barings." Having carved out a new life for himself in the west of Ireland, Leeson became chief executive of Galway United Football Club last year where he had been general manager since 2005. It has not all been plain sailing, however. During his time in what he has described as a "gang-ridden" jail, Leeson's wife left him and he was diagnosed with cancer of the colon.

October 2005 Archives

She jokingly referred to the white dress she was wearing as her wedding dress. She mentioned how she's been spending a lot of time with his kids. She talked about how he's an "actor" now. (One hosting gig on Saturday Night Live does not an actor make.) The Tour de France winner even came onstage to bring Sheryl her guitar.

Too much! Too much! Too much!

I give Gwyneth Paltrow a lot of crap because she refuses to walk the red carpet with hubby Chris Martin. But she's actually smart. Now, any little nugget she does share about her marriage makes headlines. And if they split, she really hasn't revealed anything and there aren't a billion pictures of them sucking face on the press line. She learned from bitter bust-ups with Brad and Ben. And you'd think that Lance would know better.
