Tallest U.S. Man Is 7-Foot-8 Va. Deputy

NORFOLK, Va. - To all those people who blurt out "Wow, you're tall!" as they stare up at George Bell: He knows.

And now, the world will know, too.

The lanky, 7-foot-8 Norfolk sheriff's deputy is being recognized Thursday by Guinness World Records as the Tallest Man in the United States.

Bonds, Kent show their true colors: loners to the end

From the beginning, they were the two loneliest men. Not so much off the field, in the company of family and friends, but within the game. It's the path they chose, and as the season winds down in Los Angeles this weekend, Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent appear to be lonelier than ever.

Most Giants fans didn't even grasp the callous treatment they got from Bonds in his final home game Wednesday night. Such is the extent of their idolatry, and that's fine; greatness doesn't have to come wrapped in a giddy, gracious package.

Think about it, though. Bonds, who wished he'd been informed of the Giants' plans earlier so they could stage an extended "party" in his honor, blew off a farewell press conference or even formal interviews before the game. During a homestand in which he could have thrilled fans with nightly pinch-hit appearances, he chose to pout (most inexcusable: being in street clothes in the eighth inning Tuesday night, fans chanting his name after watching him crush the ball in batting practice).

Cake Not Baked

That's different! (They haven't privatized public space.) Still, I concede that the whole area--like so many other places--has become richer and more pretentiously mansionized than what I thought it was when I criticized David Sirota. ... 1:58 A.M.

Note to self: Sure-fire catch phrases to work into text wherever possible: "Sprezzatura" ... "This cake is baked" ..."below genre norms." ... "stuff it with wow!"... 1:55 A.M.

"Only the Republicans Can Stop Bush!" Bruce Reed seems to feel that my proposed campaign message for the House GOPs--that they're the only thing standing in the way of the Congress passing Bush's misguided immigration plan--is perverse.

Super Bowl XVII starter Woodley's life drifted after football

At the end, David Woodley didn't want to sleep. He was afraid he'd never wake up. Alcohol wrecked his liver and his marriage. He was 44, lying in a hospital bed, waiting to die. The muscle and Louisiana charm that first caught the eye of his wife was gone. She once thought he looked like Christopher Reeve, like Superman. When the ball rocketed from his fingertips, receivers hid in warm-ups. Woodley had a gift.

He was 24 when he led the Miami Dolphins onto the field in Super Bowl XVII. Only 51 men have made it to the Super Bowl as starting quarterbacks and, for many, their lives are never the same. They make Hall of Fame speeches and open restaurants. Maybe Woodley did have one thing in common with them. He was never the same, either.

Twenty years after he left that field in Pasadena, Calif., he died, alone, a sliver of the hunk that Suzonne Pugh, his ex-wife, met at a bayou bar in college.
