Metrodome Pregame: The Boofmeister Is Ticked
Imagine facing a bit of a playoff crisis and having to rely on a guy named Boof. Not somebody with a wacky nickname, but an athlete who legally changed his name to Boof. That's why I like the A's today against Boof (Used to Be John) Bonser. Of course, I also liked the Padres against the Cardinals yesterday, as well as the Twins behind Johan Santana in Game 1, but if there's one thing I learned around the old campfire on those childhood trips to Yosemite, it's that you never trust someone who changes his name to Boof. It seems that the Boofmeister is a bit ticked off, and has been for a while. He had to endure three stints in the minor leagues this year, most recently in early August, when he was called up to replace Francisco Liriano (the budding legend who suddenly went down with elbow problems).
Carroll's Derby switch hits snag
Derby's attempts to sign Northern Ireland international keeper Roy Carroll from Rangers have hit a snag, reports BBC Radio Derby. The Scottish Premier League leaders have not yet released the 30-year-old from his contract. Derby hope the matter will be resolved in time for him to play in the FA Cup against Preston on Saturday. Boss Paul Jewell has also revealed on-loan defender Danny Mills could miss the rest of the season through injury. Derby announced they had completed the signing of Carroll, who has been a target of Jewell's for some weeks, before the stumbling block was revealed. If the deal goes through, Carroll will compete with Lewis Price and Stephen Bywater for the keeper's jersey. Jewell said: "We still hope to get it done, but it's very frustrating and a bit embarrassing because we thought we had word from Rangers he could leave.

Around 9 p.m. Jan. 16, Leesburg Police officers responding to reports of gunfire found Santos-Machado dead in the driver's seat of his car on Woodberry Road.
Backchecking: Who Needs A Wingman?
The Blackhawks target a puck-moving defenceman, the Leafs may look to deal others and the Blue Jackets are getting more mention in trade discussions. Hot n' Not, Call-Ups, Farm Report, Junior Report, Varsity Report and the best in quotes, Chirping, in this week's edition of TSN.ca's Backchecking. AROUND THE RINKS- Both the Atlanta Journal Constitution and TSN's own Bob McKenzie continue to discuss the increasing likelihood of Marian Hossa being available for trade from the Atlanta Thrashers. Some contenders that might be inclined to deal for a premier scoring winger? How about Detroit, Pittsburgh, Montreal, Vancouver, Dallas, San Jose and possibly even Ottawa for starters. - Picking up on Bob McKenzie's talk about a potential Flames-Canadiens deal, the Montreal Gazette dismisses a straight-up Alex Tanguay-for-Michael Ryder trade and doesn't think the Flames would really want Habs vets like Alex Kovalev and Saku Koivu, who have been discussed previously. At this point, it's hard to imagine the contending Canadiens surrendering Kovalev or Koivu.
Candidates offer final messages before Iowa caucus
No doubt that Mitt Romney would be the best candidate to run our country, especially during an economic slump. Romney also is the only true conservative left running, who is not afraid to speak in favor of our current president, and has convinced me that he believes what he says. Mormons over the decades, have been loyal to conservative values and voted Republican overwhelmingly. They represent a fine example of Americans who have strong family values, faith, education achievements and are major business leaders. And, they can be trusted. If any group has earned the right to speak for America, it is them. Go Mitt !! .
