Some withholding judgment on ORU

Oral Roberts University captured attention for money woes and messages from God long before a lawsuit filed last week alleged illegal political involvement and misspending for the benefit of the university president's family.

But Tulsans said they are waiting for evidence to back up the recent accusations before guessing at the fate of the city's charismatic Christian icon.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Tulsa County District Court, claims ORU President Richard Roberts required a government professor to make his students help .

Veterans fight to fit in at college

A network of individuals who share similar experiences waiting for student veterans when they arrive on campus is something they need."

Advocates say veterans need help navigating their GI Bill and health benefits, connecting with other veterans and -- for those in the National Guard or Reserve -- working out their academic and deployment schedules.

"There are services available, but they are not enough," said Gerry Schma, a veterans advocate who helped form the kind of office that Blumke has been advocating at Western Michigan University. "I don't think everyone imagined the magnitude of it." Since Sept. 11, 2001, 331,000 vets have used their education benefits at colleges around the nation. Last year set a record for the amount and number of Veterans Affairs education payouts since the modern day Montgomery GI Bill was adopted in 1985.

The Brampton Guardian

A Brampton man with five drunk driving convictions and a 10-year driving ban has been sentenced to six months in jail after being caught behind the wheel.

Wayne Gummerson, 59, will also be on two years probation when he is released from jail, and has again been banned from driving for the next 10 years, Mr. Justice Elliott Allen ruled recently. He was also ordered to undergo alcohol counseling.

Gummerson had not been drinking when he was stopped by Peel police in Brampton last Easter weekend, but he was not supposed to be driving, court heard. In 2004 his licence was taken away from him for 10 years after his fifth conviction for drinking and driving related offences since 1986.

Assistant Crown Attorney Sean Doyle had asked for the six month sentence, telling the judge that losing the liberty to drive is one of the punishments that goes along with drunk driving convictions.

Lundqvist Set for 42nd Straight Start

The Iron Horse rides again.

Tom Renney gave it considerable and careful thought. But in the end, he determined to start Henrik Lundqvist for the 15th time in 15 games this season tonight at Nassau Coliseum. Dating back to his 17 straight starts to end last season and his 10 in the playoffs, that means Lundqvist will tonight start his 42nd straight Rangers game.

Going back even further, Lundqvist will start for the 69th time in the Rangers' last 71 games since Dec. 30, 2006. Throw in his relief appearance for Kevin Weekes in one of those games and Lundqvist will have appeared in 70 of those 71 games.

Throw in the fact that Steve Valiquette has yet to appear in a game since last March and Renney conceded that choosing a goaltender for tonight's game was a difficult decision.
